LA for MAC Cosmetics

June 10th, 2017

Our last leg: we shoot the Pride March, visit a number of non-profits/social justice orgs, eat macro. Loved this project. Will post when it’s live.

London for MAC Cosmetics

June 3rd, 2017

I’m in London with Remedial Media, shooting leg two of our MAC AIDS Fund campaign. A whirlwind tour of the city—punctuated by terrific culinary excursions—reveals less trammeled neighborhoods: a poetry slam, a home-cooked African meal, and a tessellation of small non-profit/social justice organizations doing good work.

OM conform continues

May 17th, 2017

The OMPHALOS conform continues apace throughout May: s16mm scans are secured via a complicated billing system of high-end tequila and untraceable cash; boxes of film are trucked from mid-town to a storage facility by the East River;  the VFX sequences from Portugal are uploaded; credits are re-hashed and reified; sound mix is screened at Hofstra and tweaked.

Parlous rigging

May 9th, 2017

DP-ing a promo for the show Growing Up Hip Hop for We foolhardily embrace some parlous rigging to float the Epic over a turntable. Everyone survives . . . barely.

Not evil

May 6th, 2017

Embarking on the first leg of a multi-tiered shoot with the coruscating power couple that is Remedial Media. DP-ing a series of short films that highlight MAC Cosmetics’ MAC AIDS Fund, a philanthropic extension of MAC that has quietly been deeply invested in the fight against AIDS since the 1980s. Feels good to make a living doing not evil work.

Lighting for education

April 30th, 2017

All week is prep, then a relatively vast (for small crew) pre-lighting of a capacious, though sepulchral warehouse in Gowanus, then execution of a 4-camera shoot with 8 speakers and a 75-member audience for the Network for Public Education. Directed by the incisive and dedicated Michael Elliot.

Fastidious beauty

April 20th, 2017

Two days of fastidious beauty, shooting tabletop of a top secret medical device with Dedo lights, Arri Macro 90mm glass on Red Weapon, for visionary director Michael Elliot.

Last day of OM sound design

April 14th, 2017

A last long pilgrimage to @mrflannery‘s basement lair, and we nearly extirpate the OMPHALOS sound design with vodka shots and a bacchanalian, celebratory dinner. But completion is evaded, however, as an obscure technical dilemma keeps the last few steps in abeyance. Victory will nonetheless be ours soon.

‘Occlusion’ unblocked (finally)

April 6th, 2017

A tune in 5/4 for the cinema-musical, completed at last after nearly 3 months of tinkering. Listen here.

A message you will never see

April 3rd, 2017

The alarm pierces the quiescence of sleep at 2:15am, and by 6am crew and I are loading in to an undisclosed corporate headquarters in White Plains, NY, to document the earnest admonitions of a massive and successful company’s message to their plethora of employees, a message you will never see from a messenger you will never know.
