Much of August is spent directing, editing, and making the graphics for a convocation ceremony for Columbia Teachers College. My favorite part of this collaboration is making two music videos for AKA Horns. Here’s one of them.
I do believe I’m closing in. Draft 6, UNPINNABLE BUTTERFLIES, completed. Meanwhile, the music for this musical continues to grow.
Making a piece with Ben Harper and his friend/collaborator Megalyn Echikunwoke for the Howard Zinn’s Voices organization.
After over a month of assiduous animation work involving a horse, I deliver a hand-made piece I’m quite proud of to the burgeoning artist (his debut album coming out this fall) Braison Cyrus. This will be released in September, so stay tuned.
Created over the course of the quarantine months, we launch a video and release a song to raise money for Direct Relief, which is coordinating with public health authorities, nonprofit organizations, and businesses in the U.S. and globally to provide personal protective equipment and essential medical items to health workers responding to Covid-19. It was an honor to collaborate with such incredible musicians on this project, recorded in 11 different locations. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer and composer Scott Healy, ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ was written by Max Gabriel /aka Gabriel Judet-Weinshel on vocals and keyboard, and features Curt Bisquera on drums, Bakithi Kumalo on bass, Tariqh Akoni on guitars, Grace Kelly on saxophone, Ben Carroll on vocals, Park Stickney on harp, Angella and Maria Ahn of The Ahn Trio on violin and cello, Tim Keiper on percussion, Aileen Payumo on vocals, and Michael Flannery on vocals, snaps, and mix. I’m playing some socially-distant tennis when Ben Harper calls and asks if I can help him mix and edit a short tune for Ringo Starr’s birthday fête, featuring Ben and Dave Grohl on drums. Needless to say, tennis session ends and work begins.
During much of the month of June, I’m honored to collaborate with Jaclyn and Ben Harper on a short film for The Movement for Black Lives, amplifying the struggle for racial justice. Watch it here.
What an honor to co-direct (with the hugely talented Kristin Sudeikis) a music video for the legendary Ben Harper. The video was created during the global pandemic, and the lyrics—written before the pandemic—are eerily prescient of the time we’re all living through. Making this with Ben was a real bright ray of light in a dark time. Watch the video here.
A gallimaufry of graphics and editing work comprises much of the spring, and April finds me editing an EPK for old friend Chris Murphy, as well as doing some developmental graphics for a new internet startup (NDA signed!).
Hard at work, during these tenebrous days, on a rewrite of DEEP FAKE, the thriller regarding deep fake technology. A new draft comes out of the oven May 19th.
