Punctilious assemblage

October 26th, 2016

OM sound design kept in abeyance as this week’s focus becomes the punctilious assemblage of remaining s16mm EDL for scanning, numbers catapulted via the world wide reticulum to Metropolis Lab.

Tucked-in shirts

October 12th, 2016

Corporate work is clean and expeditious, lean on asperities, everyone is polite, and the men tuck in their shirts. Grateful to be asked. I’m in an office in mid-town with a skeleton crew, shooting a PTT (piece to tape) on the Ursa Mini 4K.

MTV + Lil’ Yachty + Cassidy = 20.5 hour-day

October 7th, 2016

I’m in Philly, DP-ing a feature piece for MTV on the burgeoning hip-hop artist Lil’ Yachty, whose ship is clearly coming in. A day not for the faineant, I follow Yachty to two radio interviews, a concert replete with screaming fans, and an after-hours recording session with the producer/DJ Cassidy.

Alek Wek for H&M

September 20th, 2016

DP-ing a spot for the H&M Foundation with the affable, candid supermodel Alek Wek on behalf of UNHCR, a spot raising awareness for the plight of refugees. It’s lovely to feel a day of work is doing some good in the world, no matter how incremental, and always a pleasure to work with the brilliantly talented photographer/director Jessie English.

OM sound design at ActII

September 19th, 2016

Having finished Act 1 of OMPHALOS sound design, I embark on ActIIp1, this film the slowest parturition, hopefully the most yielding risk. Into and through October, sedulous hours.

The plot thickens

September 8th, 2016

After an interview in NY with a writer from Wired Magazine, GANGSTERS’ peregrinations finds me in the exotic enclave of Fairfax, VA for further reconnoitering on a case about Cybercrime. We visit DHS Cybercrime headquarters, whose skin is ermine, yet whose entrails are astonishingly pedestrian. Our suspicion: Cybercrime agents are actually out-of-work home appliance repair guys with hankerings for the klieg-lights, staging a stopgap headquarters extemporaneously. Synchronicitously, the flight back finds me with a State Department analyst who expresses chagrin that my background (low, not even my name!) was not checked prior to arrival. This particular analyst is off to Barcelona for a hastily arranged tryst. So the plot thickens, just as the plane lands, depositing me back to a week of OM sound design calm.

Anchorite audiophile

August 25th, 2016

These next two weeks commence an anchorite trend, wherein I take on a sprint of sound design for OMPHALOS.

Baroque, but direct

August 13th, 2016

Another demo finished for my inchoate cinema-musical. The script continues apace. The music, Baroque, eclectic; the story, hopefully, sparse and direct.

GANGSTERS moves to NYC

August 1st, 2016

More GANGSTERS interviews in NYC. Stories about the Silk Road mastermind Ross Ulbricht, and lunch with a retired DEA agent who shares stories of gunfights in Kabul and South America. My PA is a mason. Life at the office can certainly be more pedestrian for many.

Obtunded American landscape, exempting Thai food

July 29th, 2016

I’m in Detroit, the belly of the rust belt beast, surveying the obtunded landscape of American decline, shooting for GANGSTERS with the copious Mark Monroe. We interview a 32-year veteran Detroit detective who regales us with stories of his time undercover in a whorehouse, and his friendship with the man he put in prison, a multiple-time contract killer. The presidential conventions rage in the background, post-apocalyptically, and we eat Thai food in a hipster-ed out resto that makes me feel I’m back in Brooklyn.
